Compassionate support for trauma recovery and growth.

I am dedicated to helping individuals and couples heal from trauma and emotional pain whether it’s related to betrayal trauma, childhood or adult trauma, sex addiction or other addiction, personality disorders, or dissociative disorders. My mission is to provide compassionate counseling care that is both clinically effective and Biblically sound to support recovery and personal growth.

The counseling process begins with history taking. Depending on the need, this could take 2-3 sessions. I like to do genogram work with clients to help them understand their families of origin. As an Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing International Association (EMDRIA) trained therapist, I will begin to introduce resourcing experiences to strengthen the brain and nervous system to encourage healthy/adaptive experiences. Every client is different; it might take up to a year to resource some clients, while others may be ready for EMDR trauma processing much sooner. I may offer assessments to help me to conceptualize your case also. As a trauma therapist, my goal is to help clients to integrate their experiences so that they become general memories rather than memories that emotionally activate them, leading them to cope in unhealthy ways. Primary theoretical orientations besides EMDR include Emotion Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Because the opposite of addiction is connection and the opposite of dissociation is association, a crucial focus of therapy is assisting clients in fostering healthy, safe relationships.
First and foremost, I consider myself a trauma therapist; that said, trauma is usually present in a multitude of contexts: sex addiction, love and relationship addiction, alcohol and substance addiction, betrayal trauma, attachment injuries from childhood or other trauma, and childhood sexual abuse to name a few. Finally, there are many things clients can develop addictions to besides the things I have already mentioned: eating, shopping, gambling, internet/video game use, etc. I have been trained through the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP) as an Associate Sex Addiction Therapist (ASAT). I am currently a candidate for the Certified Couple Betrayal Recovery Therapist (CCBRT) credential and will soon have the Associate Multiple Addiction Therapist (AMAT) credential specific to eating disorders. It is helpful to understand addiction as affect dysregulation — unhealthy attempts to regulate mood — and that the opposite of addiction is healthy connection.
Other issues I treat include anxiety, depression, dissociative disorders, personality disorders, relationship issues in couples, and family system issues like parental alienation and estrangement.
This really depends on client need as well as the depth of the trauma. Ultimately, successful treatment of trauma could take anywhere from 6 months to a year at least twice a month (more often if indicated) and even beyond, particularly with clients for whom the therapeutic alliance is a meaningful and helpful benefit. Clients in crisis may initially need therapy once a week for stabilization.
